6 veggie plants I always plant each season!

In January, the seed catalogs start coming to my mailbox in droves.  It's always enjoyable in the cold of winter to peruse the beautiful catalogs and dream of my garden planting in 2026.  I always find myself looking for my next heirloom tomato, my next new veggie, and the beautiful, bountiful herbs.

We have had some pretty extreme temperatures and windchills here in late January.  This became the perfect time to start dreaming and planning for 2026.

This year, we are offering some diversified options, including more veggies than we have ever offered before!

I only sell varieties and veggies that I have grown myself and I know are quality plants.  Here are a few of my all time favorites:

  1. Amish Paste heirloom tomato - this is my all time favorite canning tomato.  The fruit are large and meaty.  I find my Amish Paste tomatoes fill my pot fast when I am canning, and they cook down beautifully.  Paste tomatoes work really well in canning because they have less juice than a traditional slicer tomato.

  2. Big Rainbow heirloom tomato - This is a beautiful slicer tomato that has some beautiful colors throughout.  I describe the color as “a sunset in a tomato”.  These tomatoes are sweet and tangy, making them perfect for your sandwiches or salads!  I like to use my extra slicer tomatoes in diced tomatoes and whole tomatoes when canning, and the Big Rainbow adds a beautiful color to the jars!

  3. Mortgage Lifter heirloom tomato - I love the name, but more than anything else I love how big these tomatoes grow.  This is a tomato that will literally cover your entire burger.  It is juicy and absolutely delicious.

  4. Golden Treasure sweet peppers - I first tried these a few years ago and found I really liked the sweet taste - both raw and cooked in recipes.  These beauties are an oblong pepper, growing to about 6-8 inches long.  When they fully ripen they have a beautiful golden color to them.  I love frying these with other veggies, or adding to a sheet pan meal, using them in fajitas, or slicing them to eat raw on a veggie tray.  The plants are very prolific, and I often have extras that I chop up to put in the freezer.  They have become one of my favorite all-around sweet peppers!

  5. Pickle Bush cucumber - These plants are new to our plant sale this year, but I grow them every single year.  These bush cucumbers can work well in a container or raised bed, but they also work well in ground.  I like that they reach maturity quicker than a vine cucumber and the plants are very prolific.  I often will plant Pickle Bush plants alongside my traditional vining cucumber varieties which helps to extend my cucumber season a little bit longer since the bush cucumbers will ripen quicker.  Pickling cucumbers are typically smaller, with less water than a slicer cucumber.  I personally use them both for pickles, but also for fresh eating.

  6. Sweet Basil - A classic.  I use basil in so many things, especially when my tomatoes are ripe.  Caprese salads are a great way to enjoy tomatoes and basil in the height of summer.  Every year it seems I add “a few more” basil plants to my garden plan.  I love being able to dry some in my dehydrator to use year round.
